Prisma Health’s Annie Trout Named 2021 Drive to Zero Harm Leadership Award Winner

(Columbia, South Carolina – November 10, 2021) Prisma Health Patewood Hospital’s Annie Trout has been named the 2021 Drive to Zero Harm Leadership Award Winner for her unwavering commitment to healthcare quality and patient safety. This statewide recognition is awarded annually by SCHA to a South Carolina hospital leader who advances the principles of high reliability to eliminate harm and improve health outcomes.

“This is a team win for Patewood Hospital and couldn’t have been done without the support of CEO Tim Brookshire and our leadership team – both here at Patewood Memorial and those across Prisma Health who help lead the way,” said Trout, who is the chief nursing officer for Prisma Health Patewood Hospital, a specialty hospital in Greenville offering short-stay surgical care and maternity care.

Trout, DNP, RN, NE-BC, CNOR, has consistently demonstrated a commitment to creating a sustainable culture of safety for patients and team members.  Prisma Health Patewood Hospital consistently achieves five-star ratings with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), is one of only 9 hospitals in the country achieving the Joint Center of Excellence designation by the Joint Commission, and one of the Top Teaching Hospitals by Newsweek. These recognitions are the result of Dr. Trout’s continued focus and work on quality, safety, high reliability, and positive patient outcomes.

Dr. Trout starts her day with a concerted effort to engage patients and engage teams. This Purposeful Rounding on patients and families is a best practice approach with positive feedback. Prisma Health Patewood Hospital’s Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) are outstanding with 9 out of all 9 domains scoring favorably. This scoring has remained consistent under Dr. Trout’s leadership, maintaining focus on the Drive to Zero Harm and a best-in-class patient experience.

“Zero Harm is not just a concept, it’s an attainable goal and something Dr. Trout strives for every day,” said Karen Reynolds, Executive Director of Innovation for SCHA. “By implementing clinical practices to enhance communications and processes, healthcare providers can improve outcomes and make Zero Harm attainable. Dr. Trout is proof of that.”

Prisma Health Patewood Hospital performs the largest volume of total hip replacements in SC and the second-largest volume of total knee replacements in SC. Under Dr. Trout’s leadership, the hospital also opened a four-bed Level II Neonatal Nursery, which has allowed new moms and babies needing that additional level of care to remain at Prisma Health Patewood for the care they need. For Dr. Trout’s colleagues, she is a “servant leader,” and SCHA is proud to honor her as the 2021 Drive to Zero Harm Leadership Award winner. See all the winners at scha.org/ZeroHarm.
