The SCHA Zero Harm Blueprint Continues to Spread
In a recent issue of Healthcare Executive, SCHA and South Carolina hospitals were recognized as leading figures in the high-reliability transformation of healthcare.
The story focuses on an action plan created by ACHE and IHI’s Lucian Leape Institute called “Leading a Culture of Safety: A Blueprint for Success,” which details an upstream approach that assesses and builds on the foundational elements of a Zero Harm culture.
In April 2018, as the article notes, SCHA launched the next step of its Zero Harm program by rolling out an adaptation of that plan for South Carolina hospitals called the Zero Harm Blueprint. This bold next step builds both on the clinical success of the Zero Harm Awards program as well as the commitment to the model of highly reliable organizations that many SC hospitals were already pursuing. Both SCHA president and CEO Thornton Kirby, as well as Beaufort Memorial president and CEO Russell Baxley III, are quoted at length about their efforts alongside leaders from Memorial Hermann, the Michigan Health and Hospital Association, HCA Healthcare and the Center for Health Policy at the University of Nebraska.
