CPRMC’s Christy Moody Named 2023 Drive to Zero Harm Leadership Award Winner

SCHA is pleased to announce that Christy Moody, MSN, RN, CCRN, CPPS, Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center, is one of our two 2024 Drive to Zero Harm Leadership Award winners.

Moody at SCHA’s BetterState23 Summit

Over her six-year tenure as CNO of Carolina Pines, Moody has demonstrated a track record for commitment to quality and creating a culture of safety. Under her leadership, the hospital has achieved a Leapfrog Safety Grade A for four consecutive terms, the most recent in Spring 2023. The hospital was also recognized by Leapfrog as being a Top General Hospital. This designation is awarded annually to the highest performing hospitals across the US. In 2023, there were only 35 hospitals in the nation that achieved this prestigious award. Top Hospitals have better systems in place to prevent medication errors, higher quality maternity care, and lower hospital acquired infection rates. South Carolina only had two hospitals to receive this distinction in 2023, Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center and Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital.

Moody started a nursing shared governance council at the hospital, a decision-making model that has several councils based on the principles of partnership, equity, accountability, and ownership. Moody has also been an advocate for the nursing clinical ladder and, for the last five years, has structured a clinical ladder program to provide nurses with career advancement while in their current clinical setting but focusing on quality improvement and patient safety. The program promotes excellent patient care while supporting nursing growth and retention.  Elements within the program include continuing education, obtaining and maintaining certifications, teaching, mentoring, and volunteering in the community.

Moody is passionate about her job and her community, and it shows through her ongoing commitment to this facility and community. The number of BSN prepared nurses at Carolina Pines in 2015 was 11%, and that has grown to over 50%. She has also received her CPPS (Certified in Patient Safety) in 2021 and has been a champion in the facility supporting others to also obtain the certification.  To date, the facility has nine leaders with the CPPS certification.

Moody also leads by example. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she led the nursing units by assuring that there were enough staff to care for patients.  Most days she could be found in scrubs on the floors offering support to her staff. She also tackled the big picture, making changes in the staffing model that included utilizing non-bedside nurses when needed to assist on the floors. The hospital also launched a full-scale vaccination program, and Moody was there giving vaccinations on Saturdays right beside her staff.

Throughout her years of service, safety has remained a daily priority.  Monday through Friday, the hospitals leaders meet to discuss patient safety concerns and staff concerns and resiliency in our safety brief, and Moody frequently rounds on the staff to keep a pulse on the morale of the staff.  In 2023, the hospital conducted a Safety Culture Survey.  There was a 91% response rate in the hospital, and the facility scores well above the national average in employee engagement and commitment to patient safety.

Moody is truly a champion for patient safety in her facility and for the health of citizens in her community.
